URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SPRINGFIELD MO
400 AM CST SAT JAN 4 2014

...WINTER STORM AND VERY COLD TEMPERATURES...

.A STRONG WINTER STORM WILL MOVE OUT OF THE NORTHERN PLAINS AND
ACROSS THE MISSOURI OZARKS AND SOUTHEASTERN KANSAS SATURDAY
AFTERNOON THROUGH SUNDAY. A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL BEGIN TO MOVE
THROUGH THE REGION SATURDAY AFTERNOON AS PRECIPITATION BEGINS TO
SPREAD NORTH ON STRONG SOUTHERLY WINDS. THE PRECIPITATION WILL
INITIALLY BEGIN AS LIGHT RAIN OR DRIZZLE AND TRANSITION QUICKLY
TO SNOW LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO THIS EVENING FROM THE NORTHWEST TO
SOUTHEAST.

PERIODS OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE DURING THE
OVERNIGHT HOURS SATURDAY INTO SUNDAY MORNING. AS A RESULT
PORTIONS OF THE EASTERN OZARKS SHOULD EXPECT 5 TO 8 INCHES OF
SNOWFALL WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS. AMOUNTS ACROSS SOUTHEASTERN
KANSAS AND THE WESTERN OZARKS CAN EXPECT 2 TO 5 INCHES OF SNOWFALL
WITH THIS SYSTEM. THE SYSTEM WILL MOVE EAST OF THE REGION BY
SUNDAY EVENING WITH SNOW TAPERING OFF TO FLURRIES AND ENDING
FROM WEST TO EAST SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

BEHIND THIS SYSTEM AN ARCTIC AIR MASS WILL OVERSPREAD THE REGION
SUNDAY INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK. LOWS ON BOTH SUNDAY AND MONDAY NIGHTS
WILL DROP TO AROUND ZERO TO NEAR TEN BELOW ZERO WITH THE COLDEST
READINGS EXPECTED ACROSS CENTRAL MISSOURI AND THE WARMEST ACROSS
FAR SOUTHERN MISSOURI. HIGHS ARE MONDAY WILL REMAIN IN THE SINGLE
DIGITS WITH HIGHS STRUGGLE TO WARM TO THE ZERO DEGREE MARK ACROSS
PORTIONS OF CENTRAL MISSOURI. STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS WILL
ACCOMPANY THE ARCTIC AIR MASS AND WILL RESULT IN WIND CHILL VALUES
OF 20 TO 30 BELOW ZERO SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY AND VALUES OF 10
TO 20 BELOW MONDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY.

BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW WILL ALSO OCCUR AS THE WINDS INCREASE
SATURDAY EVENING INTO SUNDAY REDUCING VISIBILITIES.

WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW...WHICH IS IN EFFECT
FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 9 AM CST SUNDAY.

* TIMING AND AREAS AFFECTED...EXTREME SOUTHEASTERN KANSAS AND THE
WESTERN MISSOURI OZARKS WEST OF A GAINESVILLE TO LEBANON TO
VIENNA MISSOURI LINE THIS EVENING INTO SUNDAY MORNING.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...SNOWFALL AMOUNTS WILL RANGE FROM 2 TO 6
INCHES WITH THE LESSER AMOUNTS OCCURRING ACROSS SOUTHEASTERN
KANSAS WITH AMOUNTS INCREASING TO THE EAST.

* WINDS AND VISIBILITY...STRONG WINDS WILL AFFECT THE REGION AS
THE STORM SYSTEM BEGINS TO EXIT THE REGION. NORTHERLY WINDS OF 15
TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 30 MPH WILL ALLOW FOR BLOWING AND
DRIFTING SNOW ACROSS THE AREA. THE BLOWING SNOW WILL REDUCE
VISIBILITIES AT TIMES TO A MILE OF LESS.

* IMPACTS...TRAVEL CONDITIONS WILL DETERIORATE FROM NORTHWEST TO
SOUTHEAST FROM THIS EVENING INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS INCLUDING
STATE HIGHWAYS 54...13...AND 65...AND ALONG INTERSTATES 49 AND
44.

DANGEROUSLY COLD CONDITIONS WILL SPREAD INTO THE REGION SUNDAY
NIGHT INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK BEHIND THIS SYSTEM. WIND CHILL VALUES
SUNDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY MORNING WILL FALL TO 10 TO 30 DEGREES
BELOW ZERO.
